Previously, the income limit was Rs 2 lakh, but it was raised to Rs 25 lakh in June 2015.

Anyone with a maximum income of 25 lakh per year from non-agricultural sources is permitted by law to buy agricultural land, irrespective of their family origin. Any Indian resident, institution, corporate, or academic establishment, regardless of annual revenue from non-agricultural sources, can now purchase farmland in Karnataka. In 2020 the Karnataka government removed limitations on non-agriculturists for buying and selling agricultural plots, thereby repealing a decades-old rule. Hence a non-agriculturist could not buy any agricultural land in Karnataka before 2015. A person without any agricultural land in Karnataka or if the individual's annual income from non-agricultural activities was more than two lakhs per annum, they were called non-agriculturists. Before 2015, a farmer from the state of Karnataka with an agricultural background with ownership of agricultural land was the only person who could buy agricultural land. But the purchase of agricultural land involves many restrictions.

In the state of Karnataka, a non - agricultural land can be brought by any Indian citizen or by an NRI.
